A woman can prepare a man to listen by letting him know in advance what it is that she needs. This allows him to adjust his instinctive expectations to learned expectations. For example, when a man has worked hard or was particularly successful that day, his instinctive expectations are much higher. When she talks about her problems, he fully expects her to respond favorably to his solutions and doesn‘t relate to her need to communicate feelings and talk about problems as a way to feel better. He instinctively feels that as a result of his actions that day she should be happy. Without some preparation from her, it is easy for him to be frustrated.

When a man begins to realize that he has gone about as far up the ladder as he is going to go, and his partner is still complaining, he despairs of ever receiving the support he wants most. As he was moving up, there was always a little voice in the back of his head saying “When I get a little more successful, she‘ll appreciate me. When I make a little more money and take her on that vacation, she‘ll be happy.” But when he finally levels out at a fixed income, it becomes very hard for him to handle her unhappiness. This stress is relieved when he understands what she really needs and that it is not about how much money he makes or whether he can solve her problems.
